Unlike most, I truly love the cold weather. Especially cold, rainy weather. While some deem it gloomy and miserable, I find that I feel more motivated to work or bake when the weather is blue, strangely enough. It also provides justification for the 100 cups of tea I am guaranteed to drink. Admittedly, it is not so much the cold that I like, but the absence of the heat. I hate feeling sticky and sweaty, but living in sunny Queensland means I feel like this 75% of the year. The Winter is a welcomed break from the feeling of walking through thick, gravy-like, muggy heat. In saying that, Winter in Brisbane is something like 16ºC at its worst...so I can't honestly say I've experienced a true freezing Winter. Maybe I wouldn't like it as much as I do if I lived in a country where the cold was proper cold.
Can we all agree though, that it is much easier to warm up than it is to cool down? You can only take off so many layers of clothes before it becomes awkward and socially unacceptable, but in Winter, step out looking like the Michelin Man and you'll find that no one bats an eyelid. Layering is not only fashion-forward, but smart. Jackets and coats and boots are that wonderful combination of trendy and comfortable in the one garment. Then you've got your Winter food and beverage: steaming hot drinks, soups, casseroles, baked sweets, stewed fruit and spices like cinnamon, turmeric and nutmeg. It makes me feel happy and calm just thinking about it.
In Winter, I typically enjoy porridge for breakfast. It is easy, delicious and filling, sustaining me for most of the morning and into early afternoon. It's very easy to over-portion oats though and so I like to mix my rolled oats with chia seeds, that swell in liquid, to give me additional protein, fibre and fats, keeping me full for hours.
In this recipe I added bright yellow turmeric with ground cinnamon to my morning porridge and topped it with fresh citrus, fig and pistachios. Like a winter hug in a bowl. Personally, I love a little touch of sweetness in my oats, and while you can use maple syrup, honey or brown sugar, I prefer to use Natvia Natural Sweetener.
