The humble sandwich gets a facelift! From a cheesy breakfast brioche to an Indian-inspired toastie, there are no more boring lunches with these 10 recipes to inspire you to create a gourmet sando at home.
What makes for a good sandwich?
- High quality ingredients: starting with good quality, fresh ingredients is a great start to an exceptional sandwich. Purchase fresh produce from your local grocer or market, opt for deli meats and cheese and visit the bakery for your bread, wraps and rolls.
- Use a combination of textures and tastes: alter between crunchy and soft components, creamy, vinegary, sweet and salty. The variation within each bite creates complexity.
- Add veggies: do not underestimate the power of vegetables on a sandwich. Fresh salad ingredients make for a sandwich that is both high in flavour and nutrition. However, considering point number two, roasted or pickled vegetables will also add variety and flavour, and complement their fresh counterparts.
Components of a sandwich
- Bread: a simple sandwich loaf in white, wholemeal, rye or grain varieties are most readily available, but changing the sandwich vessel to a bread roll, wrap, brioche loaf, bagel or Turkish bread can really elevate your lunch.
- Condiments, sauces and dressings: mayonnaise, pesto, chutney and mustard are common sandwich condiments, which you could also improve upon by combining a few together, adding herbs or spices.
- Meats and cheese: this will depend on your taste preferences and dietary requirements. Deli meats are often the go to, but consider using leftover roast chicken or beef from your dinner the night before, tinned fish or poached chicken as well. Choose a cheese variety that complements your protein of choice. Remember it is not always essential to include cheese in a sandwich!
- Vegetables: fresh salad ingredients, roasted or pickled can add a huge amount of flavour to your lunch, as well as nutrition. Vegetables also contribute fibre to our diets, and help us stay fuller for longer. An essential component to the perfect sandwich in my opinion.
