A tropical (and zero alcohol) twist on the classic, this coconut margarita is bright, tart and refreshing.
So far I've really been enjoying creating alcohol-free drinks this month! One thing that I've always thought about is how cocktails are a 'special' drink. They feel different to just a juice or soft drink. I think that feeling is the hardest part to replicate when you a removing the booze. There's been a recent boom in the non-alcoholic drink industry, with increased availability and all around better tasting options. Brands are creating wonderful versions of popular spirits, meaning we can now make our favourite, classic mocktails at home, sans alcohol.
The margarita has got to be one of the most popular cocktails out. I don't think I've met anyone that doesn't love a marg! The classic is a delicate balance of flavours. A typical ratio is two parts tequila to one part Cointreau and one part lime juice. My personal favourite is the Tommy's Margarita, which removes the orange liqueur and adds agave syrup. Today's coconut margarita is a riff on the Tommy's, adding in a little coconut milk and extract for that tropical twist.
Going back to what I said about cocktails being 'special', the combination of using non-alcohol spirits, along with lime, syrup and coconut gives this coconut margarita that extra quality. This is the kind of drink that you make up at a barbecue with friends, or on a Saturday afternoon to accompany a plate of snacks. It's refreshing and delicious! Put the coconut margarita on regular rotation I say!
If you do want to add alcohol, simply use regular blanco tequila in place of the N.A kind.
