Marmalade and (non alcoholic) gin come together to make this breakfast martini, reminiscent of your favourite morning meal.
The breakfast martini has an intriguing history that traces back to the late 20th century. It was created by Salvatore Calabrese, a renowned Italian bartender and mixologist. In the late 1990s, Calabrese was experimenting with flavours and came up with the idea of a breakfast-inspired drink, after sitting down for marmalade on toast with his wife one morning.
This cocktail gained fame at the Library Bar in London, where Calabrese worked. He combined gin, Cointreau, fresh lemon juice, and a spoonful of orange marmalade to craft this unique drink. The use of jam or preserves in cocktails was not common at that time, making the breakfast martini a trailblazer in the mixology scene.
The addition of jam provides a sweet and tangy twist to this cocktail, appealing to a broader audience. It's zesty and refreshing, and therefore unsurprising that it became an instant hit among patrons. The popularity of the breakfast martini spread, and it soon found its way onto menus in bars and restaurants worldwide.
Today, the breakfast martini remains a beloved choice for those seeking a vibrant and fruity cocktail to kickstart their evenings. Salvatore Calabrese's innovation in using jams and preserves has left a lasting legacy in the world of mixology, inspiring bartenders to experiment with unconventional ingredients to create new and exciting flavours.
Continuing my zero proof drinks series, I've made some slight changes to the original recipe. Swap gin for its non-alcoholic counterpart and orange juice for the triple sec. Watch the video here. if you make this drink, don't forget to tag me on TikTok or Instagram. I love to see it!
