There are two different versions of the history of the cocktail, one from New York and the other from London. In New York, the drink was first introduced as the "John Collins". The name change was likely due to a popular prank at the time in which people would ask their friends if they knew Tom Collins, a made-up person, and then proceed to spread false rumors about him. The drink became so popular that it was eventually named after this imaginary man.
In London, the drink was first introduced at a bar in the late 1800s. It quickly became a popular drink in London and spread to other parts of Europe. Today, the Tom Collins is enjoyed all around the world and remains a favourite of cocktail enthusiasts and casual drinkers.
