The Shirley Temple is making a comeback! A sweet and refreshing drink to sip in the afternoon sun.
Or maybe it's the Dirty Shirley - the vodka spiked version of this classic non-alcoholic drink. I read this article in the New York Times last year calling the Dirty Shirley the drink of the summer and while I'm about 12 months too late (and summer here in Australia actually finished three days ago), I've come around to the bright pink, cherry topped sip. My husband has decided to take on a dry March, so it's timely to make the classic, children's version of the drink, if you will. But I must say, a shot of vodka or white rum would definitely kick this drink up a notch. Each to their own.
Unsurprisingly, the drink is named after Shirley Temple. She denies any involvement in it's creation and also claims to not enjoy the drink, as it is far too sweet. You do run the risk of this one becoming quite sickly sweet, and so my suggestion is to use very dry ginger ale. The grenadine, a pomegranate-based bright red syrup adds enough sugar, adding too much more takes away from the enjoyment of the drink.
