    Gin Basil Smash

    Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

The Gin Basil Smash is a delicious, herbacious cocktail that has become a modern classic, perfect for an afternoon drink.

Also known as the Gin Pesto, the Gin Basil Smash is a refreshing cocktail that has gained immense popularity in recent years. It has unique flavor profile that combines the herbal and citrus notes of basil with the botanicals of gin. The origins of the drink can be traced back to Germany in 2008. It was invented by Jörg Meyer, a bartender at the Le Lion Bar de Paris in Hamburg. Meyer was experimenting with different herbs and botanicals to create new cocktails when he stumbled upon the perfect combination of gin and basil.

The original recipe calls for gin, fresh basil leaves, lemon juice, and sugar syrup. The ingredients are muddled together, shaken with ice, and then strained into a glass filled with ice. The resulting cocktail is a vibrant green color and has a refreshing taste that is perfect for sipping on a warm day.

Since its creation, the Gin Basil Smash has become a staple on cocktail menus around the world. Many bartenders have put their own spin on the recipe by using different herbs, fruits, and sweeteners. Some popular variations include adding cucumber, elderflower, or even jalapeno for an added kick.

This is such a simple recipe to make at home! All you need is a few ingredients and a cocktail shaker. This versatile cocktail can be enjoyed on its own or paired with a variety of foods, such as grilled meats or seafood.
