The perfect boozy brunch drink, a classic French 75 with gin, lemon and bubbles.
I'm jetting off to Europe next week and I could NOT be more excited. Very much a first world problem, but the lack of travel in the past two or so years has me craving the experience of other places and cultures. I've never been to Europe before, and so I'll be checking out England, Scotland, France and Italy. Hence French 75! A tip of the hat to my holiday!
This drink is a classic, up there with the Manhattan and Old Fashioned. It's origins are a little bit of a mystery, but the cocktail is named after the fast firing 75 millimetre field gun that the French used in World War 1. Despite this, the French 75 is a very enjoyable drink.
It's quite boozy, with the combination of gin and champagne, but it makes for a great brunch drink if you're tired of mimosas and bellinis. The original recipe uses powdered sugar, but modern recipes substitute this with sugar syrup. I used Four Pillars Yuzu gin for this recipe. The botanicals in this gin go well in the drink, in my opinion. You can use any champagne or sparkling wine as well.
