Brisbane Eats: Plum Tucker Cafe

The cooler weather brings with it a variety of different produce; the stomachs of regular cafe goers are now grumbling for warmer, heartier meals that have the ability to heat from the inside out. Winter in Brisbane is a whole new affair this year, it’s only June, and so far we’ve experienced single digit daytime temperatures one day, with warmer, breezier climates the next. In the Sunshine State, a cafe’s winter menu needs to cater for our moody weather patterns, offering both heavy and lighter options, as often it is near impossible to predict what the next day will bring.

Family favourite, Plum Tucker cafe, nestled in the suburban outskirts of Brisbane have recently launched their new 2016 winter menu, and I was lucky enough to go along and sample some of the delicious dishes.

The team at Plum are committed whole-heartedly to creating a more eco-friendly business, with a focus on animal welfare and sustainability practices. Recently, we have seen this particular ethos employed by many a café and restaurant, as consumers are now becoming more aware of the less-than-impressive business behind certain food industries. It is for these reasons that vegan and vegetarian diets are on the rise, as is the amount of people with sensitivities and intolerances. With all this in mind, Plum’s menu was designed with everybody in mind, and offers a variety of choices regardless of what your preferences are – and without the elevated prices.

Some of my favourite dishes on the new menu include:

  • The avocado and organic feta toast with roasted capsicum and hazelnut dukkah (gluten free option available)
  • Coconut quinoa porridge with poached pear, maple and buckwheat crumble and chocolate sauce (vegan, gluten free)
  • Peanut butter French toast sandwich with maple custard and chocolate soil
  • Beef cheek pot pie with slow cooked beef cheeks in a red wine sauce with winter veg and creamy mash

A special mention goes to the avocado toast with strawberries and housemade vegan chocolate hazelnut spread – you wouldn’t think it works, but it does! The menu also has a ‘build your own’ selection available – which I quite like, as this means no matter what your taste preferences, food sensitivities, or diet requirements are, there is something available for you to enjoy.
